There’s now a new push for a universal flu vaccine that could protect our children from all influenza strains. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) is now prioritizing the creation of a vaccine that can “provide durable protection for all age groups against multiple influenza strains, including those that might cause a pandemic.”
“NIAID officials detail the Institute’s new strategic plan for addressing the research areas essential to creating a safe and effective universal influenza vaccine. They describe the scientific goals that will be supported to advance influenza vaccine development. The strategic plan builds upon a workshop NIAID convened in June 2017 that gathered scientists from academia, industry and government who developed criteria for defining a universal influenza vaccine, identified knowledge gaps, and delineated research strategies for addressing those gaps.”

In short, they are really working hard for our benefit.
The key ingredient of their research is the identification of epitopes, or short stretches of viral protein, that are common to most, if not all, strains of influenza.
It is important to understand that as opposed to older versions of flu vaccines where live “attenuated” viruses are being deliberately injected into our children, this universal vaccine takes it to the next level.
An epitope, also known as antigenic determinant, is the part of an antigen that is recognized by the immune system, specifically by antibodies, B cells, or T cells. For example, the epitope is the specific piece of the antigen to which an antibody binds. The part of an antibody that binds to the epitope is called a paratope. Although epitopes are usually non-self proteins, sequences derived from the host that can be recognized (as in the case of autoimmune diseases) are also epitopes.
In short, they are now entertaining the idea of vaccinating our children at the genetic level. Recall that the NIAID just mentioned that

A blockbuster deal between Bayer and Monsanto is moving ahead.
Under a proposed settlement filed on Tuesday, Bayer agreed to sell its seed and herbicide businesses to German chemical company BASF — a move the US Department of Justice required for the deal’s approval.
Bayer and Monsanto first announced the $60 billion deal in September 2016, saying the move would boost agriculture research and innovation.
“By the time 2050 rolls around, the world will have 10 billion people, and the demand for food will double,” Robb Fraley, Monsanto’s outgoing chief technology officer, told Business Insider last year. “The whole point here is that the business combination between Monsanto and Bayer will allow the companies to invest in and create more innovation, and it’s going to take a huge amount of innovation in order to double the world’s food supply.”

The merger of the dreaded manufacturer of Zyklon B gas that was used to silently eliminate millions of Christians and Muslims alike in World War 2, and the god of genetic manipulations, should not be a cause for alarm. In order to hide Monsanto from public view, Bayer plans to just drop the name altogether.
The German drugmaker and chemical company Bayer has finalized a $66 billion blockbuster deal to gobble up the agricultural giant Monsanto.
In a statement on Monday, Bayer said it planned to drop Monsanto’s 117-year-old title and would henceforth be known only as Bayer.
“Bayer will remain the company name. Monsanto will no longer be a company name,” the company said. “The acquired products will retain their brand names and become part of the Bayer portfolio.”

Last month Bill Gates announced his foundation will be earmarking up to $12 million to advance such work. Sen. Edward Markey (D–Mass.) introduced a bill in February that would provide $1 billion in government funding for a universal flu vaccine. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) called such research a priority and unveiled a strategic plan for it. The White House also gave a nod to the universal flu vaccine; its Office of Science and Technology Policy tweeted in March it is “closer than ever.” Yet the road ahead is littered with obstacles.

The reference is the New York Times, 3/15/15, “Protection Without a Vaccine.” It describes the frontier of research—the use of synthetic genes to “protect against disease,” while changing the genetic makeup of humans. This is not science fiction:
“By delivering synthetic genes into the muscles of the [experimental] monkeys, the scientists are essentially re-engineering the animals to resist disease.”
“‘The sky’s the limit,’ said Michael Farzan, an immunologist at Scripps and lead author of the new study.”
“The first human trial based on this strategy – called immunoprophylaxis by gene transfer, or I.G.T. – is underway, and several new ones are planned.” [That was three years ago.]
“I.G.T. is altogether different from traditional vaccination. It is instead a form of gene therapy. Scientists isolate the genes that produce powerful antibodies against certain diseases and then synthesize artificial versions. The genes are placed into viruses and injected into human tissue, usually muscle.”
Here is the punchline: “The viruses invade human cells with their DNA payloads, and the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA. If all goes well, the new genes instruct the cells to begin manufacturing powerful antibodies.”
Read that again: “the synthetic gene is incorporated into the recipient’s own DNA.”

So, to all young parents reading this, you are all cordially invited to a well-compensated clinical trials near you.
In the current phase II trial, which will occur across several U.S. institutions and will be led by Robert Atmar at Baylor College of Medicine, there will be up to 120 healthy adult volunteers randomly placed into two groups. The first group will get a shot of M-001 whereas the other group will get a placebo. Then, several weeks later, the first group will get another shot of M-001 and the second group will get another placebo. Finally, at day 172, both groups will receive a third shot—the seasonal flu vaccine. Blood will be periodically drawn from both groups to evaluate their immune responses to the experimental vaccine (or placebo) and the seasonal vaccine. The researchers plan to have some results within two years.
… NIAID put out a call last month for proposals to enroll pregnant women and their infants in long-term studies to see how flu strains circulating in a given birth year, vaccination status and natural infections influence flu immunity. Eventually, Fauci says, he expects “we will go through universal influenza vaccine 1.0, 2.0 and so on that will protect against different viruses.”
